Imagine a girl sitting at the bank of a river with her clay pot that she uses to fetch water. The girl wants to see her beloved and she can see his hut across the river. The night is dark, the waves are splashing hight and there are no boats so the only way she can cross the river is using her clay pot. She starts talking to her clay pot about taking her to the other side of the river so she can see her beloved. This song is a dialogue between her and the clay pot. At the end of the dialogue her desire to see her beloved is so strong that she is ready to die for it. She is aware that she might not be able to cross the river alive in this deadly night but she has become fearless. Her love or her beloved has overcome her fear of death and she says that she will meet him today at all costs, if not alive, then as a corpse but she will meet him.
(Girl says to her clay pot)
Right there across the Chanab River lies my beloved’s hut
Come on, clay pot, let’s keep going
(The clay pot replies)
The night is deathly dark, the river waves surge high around us
Oh listen, girl, don’t be stubborn
(The clay pot continues)
I’m a pot made of unbaked clay, bound to melt away in the river
Being unsound and unsteady, I cannot but fail in carrying you across the river
The unsound can only reach an unsound end
This is a truth known to all
Don’t rely on the unsound to help you reach the shore
Oh listen, girl, don’t be stubborn
The night is deathly dark, the river waves surge high around us
Oh listen, girl, don’t be stubborn
(The girl says to herself)
Look, the waves are splashing higher and higher, but don’t lose heart
I must go to meet Manhiwal (beloved) today at any cost
(The girl says to the clay pot again)
Look, the waves are splashing higher and higher, but don’t lose heart
So take me there, help me
I must go to meet Manhiwal (beloved) today at any cost
Yes this is what my heart desires
Today the beloved will be greeted with the corpse of his lover (If I cannot reach there alive, I’ll die trying so my corpse can see him)
Come on, clay pot, let’s keep going
Right there across the Chanab River lies my beloved’s hut
Come on, clay pot, let’s keep going
(The clay pot replies)
The night is deathly dark, the river waves surge high around us
Oh listen, girl, don’t be stubborn
(Clay pot) Hold firmly to the sound guide who will take you to the shore
(Girl) O clay pot, o clay pot!!
